The University of Maine will be launching VolturnUS, the first floating wind turbine in US water late spring 2013. This will be a 1/8 scale model of a 6 MW turbine, abd will be grid connected off Castine Maine in 80 ft of water. The VolturnUS model uses alternative materials and building processes to reduce costs and corosion in the marine environment. This is the first step in demonstrating the design. 2 full scale models with 6 MW turbines each are being planned for deployment in 2016 near the island of Monhegan.
